Japan's take on the Willys Jeep CJ, the Toyota FJ Land Cruiser, was a brilliant experiment in how to take an already-amazing vehicle and make it even better.

The latest masterpiece to roll out of The FJ Company's workshop is this magnificent matte olive Land Cruiser FJ43. The stunning build begins with a classic foundation — the steel body of an authentic Land Cruiser, but under that classic exterior is something much different.  

The FJ Company has cut out a niche for itself resto-modding old Land Cruisers, the type after which the discontinued retro FJ Cruiser was modeled after. This right here is their latest commission, and to our eyes, one of the most tempting we’ve seen yet.  

Resto-mods offer the best of both worlds: old school styling with new school performance. The FJ Company knows its way around the classic Japanese 4x4s. So much so that they offer a huge variety of FJ Land Cruisers they could build for you, from restorations to proper resto-mods.

Having already produced what we believe to be the world’s best Land Cruiser, the specialists at the FJ Company in the United States have recently completed another outstanding resto-mod project. This time the commission was to restore and modify a rare 1964 Land Cruiser station wagon – more specifically an FJ45LV, the shortest-lived of all 40-series export models.  

Think of it as a trail-ready alternative to a Singer-built Porsche 911, albeit with greater adherence to the original vehicle’s formula and at a somewhat less ridiculous price. The build quality and details are meticulously rendered and restored—such as the super-cool vintage Toyota badges that wrap around one of the rear corners—and its boxy, old-school charm is off the charts.

The FJ Company continues to impress with their beautifully reimagined vintage 4x4s, like this elegant take on a 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. Outfitted with contemporary technology to bring it into 2018 along with a brand new engine that amps up the power, this is everything an adventuremobile should be and then some.  

Sometimes the best travel doesn't involve buying a ticket. Sometimes you just want to get behind the wheel and go. The FJ Company's job is to take Land Cruisers and restore them to their original, land-cruising glory, plus a few modern touches like a Bluetooth stereo. The process takes months, so this might be more of a Holiday 2018 kind of gift, but given the price you'll probably be covered for a couple of years.
