Need to know about us?

We are The FJ Company, a boutique custom car builder specialized in high end classic Toyota Land Cruisers.

We are on a mission to preserve the essence of the classic Land Cruiser, while re-engineering our vehicles with modern Toyota components that improve drivability and overall performance.

Over the years, we have completed and delivered over 100 vehicles for clients all over the world, and our work has been featured in countless publications.

We take on a limited number of projects per year that align well with our mission and work closely with our clients throughout the build process to deliver exceptional vehicles.   Learn more about us here

What kind of Toyota Land Cruisers do you sell?

We build a limited number of custom Toyota Land Cruisers. Our flagship model is The FJ Company G40, an on- and off-road friendly 4x4, custom-built by hand - using an authentic classic 40 series Land Cruiser that has been re-engineered and assembled with modern components from Toyota.

The G40 by The FJ Company is available in multiple variants, including the G40 (short wheelbase), G43 (medium wheelbase), and G45 (long wheelbase)*. All variants include front coil suspension, modern anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability and traction control, and are powered by a new Toyota 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Each variant can be customized to your desired trim level, depending on your intended use and performance requirements: Heritage, Expedition, and our top-of-the-line trim, the Signature. Compare them all here.

* Limited supplies. Available by special order only.

What is the difference between the Heritage, Expedition, and Signature?

The G40 is available in 3 variants: G40, G43, and G45.  Every variant includes the features mentioned above, and are customized further within three different trims: Heritage, Expedition, and Signature:

  1. The Heritage trim is our most classic looking vehicle. It will have classic headlights with H4 bulbs, classic fog lights, classic bumpers, traditional wheels with hubcaps, and classic looking bucket seats from Toyota.
  2. The Expedition trim is optioned for adventure. It has our Expedition bumper, a beefy Warn Zeon 8 winch, PIAA fog lights, Hi-Lift on the side, and sportier bucket seats from Corbeau. We also included a Tuffy Box as a center console and extra Raptor Lining inside the cabin to keep things protected. On the mechanical side, front and rear lockers are included by default, a feature that will come in handy in the most severe off-road conditions.
  3. And finally, at the high end of the spectrum is our Signature trim. The Signature G40-S or G43-S is our top of the line vehicle. It comes standard with the Toyota 1GR-FE along with a Magnuson supercharger.  It includes custom designed CNC-machined accessories, including mirrors, shifters, foot pedals, and window levers, and repurposed OEM bumpers with integrated fog lights by Baja Designs. Inside, you’ll find Recaro seats, premium leather, a custom center console, and an entertainment system with Apple CarPlay. The Signature version includes KING shocks, Evo Corse DAKAR wheels finished in gun metal gray, You can see an example here.

How is a G40 different from an FJ40, FJ43 or FJ45?

Our G40 vehicles are based on an original FJ40, FJ43, or FJ45 body and chassis, but they are re-engineered and assembled with modern mechanical components from Toyota. They include certain creater comforts mechanical features that were not available on the original, such as a front coil suspension, a more advanced power steering system, ABS brakes, traction control, and much more.

Are these vehicles restored?

Our vehicles are built through a combination of restoration, assembly, and custom manufacturing. We call this process RestoManufacturing.

From a “donor” FJ40, FJ43, or FJ45, we use approximately 40% of the original steel body panels.  60% are new fabricated panels using galvanized steel*.  The original chassis is modified, reinforced, and "hot dip" galvanized, then fitted with a new engine, transmission, steering, and suspension system.

We source new components from Toyota and other suppliers around the world and manufacture certain components in-house.

Galvanized components apply to vehicles ordered as of November 2018.

Is my G40 registered like a new car?

When your vehicle is delivered, it will look and smell like new, but it is still a classic car and will be registered as one. The year of registration and VIN are based on the chassis selected for your project.    The odometer on your vehicle will show 500 to 1000 miles.  These correspond to miles accrued during our testing and tuning process.

Can I choose the year of my vehicle?

The G40 is built using an original FJ Land Cruiser chassis and body that were manufactured by Toyota between 1976 to 1983*. If you have a specific model year in mind, please let us know and we’ll see what’s available in our inventory at that time.   Keep in mind that the year of the donor will NOT impact the look or the specifications of your G40.

* Some are built using an older chassis (1970 to 1975).

How can I use my G40?

Most of our clients use their vehicles actively as weekend drivers - for cruising around town, trips to the beach, camping, fishing, biking, you name it! Others will take them on serious off-road adventures, or even use them as daily drivers. However, they are not intended to be your primary vehicle.

Is a G40 suitable for an overland expedition or 4x4 rally?

Absolutely.  For long range travel, 4x4 rallys, and overland trips, we recommend the Expedition version of the G40, 43, or 45.  This version is built by default with features you will need in serious off-road conditions, along with finishes that are meant to withstand the most harsh environments.   Based on your specific needs, we can recommend other features that may not be readily available on our online builder, such as roof racks, additional LED lighting, extra fuel and water containers, and much more.

If you’re planning on towing an adventure or camping trailer, please let us know.  The chassis on your G40 may need to be reinforced depending on the specific towing needs.

What about safety features?

Our vehicles do not have modern safety features. They do not have airbags, autonomous driving features, early crash warning systems, etc.  We sell classic cars with modern performance components.

All G40 variants by The FJ Company are equipped with enhanced performance components such as anti-lock brakes (ABS), a system which helps prevent your wheels from “locking up” in aggressive braking conditions, and electronic stability and traction control, which helps to limit the possibility of losing control while taking a tight corner or accelerating.

All of our vehicles have a roll bar and come equipped with retractable shoulder belts for driver and passenger safety, and retractable lap belts for rear occupants on side-facing rear bench seats.  When equipped with a forward-facing bench, rear passengers will have shoulder belts as well.

Will my vehicle have air conditioning and heat?

All of our vehicles are equipped with Vintage Air® climate control systems and a front windshield defogger. Air vents are installed in the front and integrated into the dash. Some versions are available with heated seats as well.

Keep in mind that the body of our vehicles is built using the original steel body of a classic FJ Land Cruiser - that’s what makes them awesome. However, they are not insulated or sealed like a modern car.

Are these replicas or kit cars?

No. The G40 by The FJ Company is built on an authentic Toyota FJ Land Cruiser chassis that is modified and "hot dip" galvanized prior to assembly.  Approximately 40% of the body panels are restored from the originals, while the remaining 60% are new fabricated to near factory specifications using galvanized steel.  We don't use aluminum reproductions.

All mechanical components are new and found in more modern Toyota Land Cruiser versions.

Do you sell parts?

Not currently. However, we do source parts for customers who have purchased their vehicles from us.

How much does a G40 cost?

The G40 by The FJ Company has a base price of $210,000. Additional charges may apply for certain variants and options, as you’ll see on the online builder.

What are your payment terms?

We divide payment into three installments. We request a 50% down payment when you place your order, a second payment (25%) is due before we begin bodywork and paint, and a third payment (25%) is due at the time of your final inspection, prior to shipping.

Do you have completed vehicles available for purchase?

Most of our vehicles are built to the custom specifications of our clients, based on the features and options available in our online builder. However, we do occasionally have some that are available now.

How long does it take from order to delivery?

The process takes approximately 12 to 18 months from order to delivery. Once you submit an order through our website, we can discuss the specific timing depending on what's currently in production.

Even though we've established a robust production process, keep in mind we build custom vehicles using largely manual processes. While we will do our best to provide a rough estimate and provide updates when your project is underway, exact delivery timelines are not possible.

Is The FJ Company affiliated with Toyota?

No, but we’re their #1 fan! The FJ Company is an independently owned and operated business. It is not affiliated with the Toyota Motor Corporation or Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Can I service my G40 at a Toyota dealership?

Although it uses Toyota components, the G40 by The FJ Company is an entirely custom vehicle. We recommend servicing your vehicle with us, or with a specialist that has been previously vetted by our company.

I already have a Land Cruiser. Can you convert it into a G40?

Most customers that send us their Land Cruiser to use as the basis for a project do so because they have a very unique model or a strong emotional attachment to it. Generally speaking, the production and shipping costs will be largely the same as ordering one from our website.

Can you build a right-hand drive G40 for those of us who drive on the left side of the road?

Yes! We can build right-hand drive (RHD) G40s upon request. Pricing may be $10,000 to $20,000 higher than what is advertised on the website for each trim level.

Can you ship the car to my country?

Yes, we've shipped cars all over the world. Keep in mind that registering a vehicle outside of the U.S.  is your responsibility and expense. Every country has different rules for importing classic vehicles with extensive modifications, so please do your homework before placing an order.

Can you do this with other Toyota Land Cruiser models?

While our core competency is transforming the FJ40, FJ43, and FJ45 Land Cruisers into The FJ Company G40, we can build automatics or use 20 series, 55's, 60 series, and 70 series Land Cruisers in our projects. These builds are considered bespoke and pricing is based on the specifics of the project.

Do you still offer the Classic, Sport, and Signature models, as previously advertised by The FJ Company?

All of our production is now focused on the G40 and its multiple variants.

How do I know if a Land Cruiser I see online was built by The FJ Company?

Be warned! Some sellers at physical auctions and websites such as eBay, Craigslist, and other used car dealers are selling classic Land Cruisers “built by The FJ Company.” While some of our builds have been re-sold on other websites, the only way to guarantee that you’re buying an authentic vehicle by The FJ Company is to contact us before the purchase.    We have detailed records of every vehicle we have worked.

Simply send us an email with the VIN and a link to where it is being advertised.  We'll run a quick check and get back to you.

Where do you source the "donor" vehicles?

We source Land Cruisers to be used as "donors" for our projects from all over the world as long as they were produced in the Toyota factory in Japan. The more exotic models have come from places as remote as Montana in the USA, Saudi Arabia, and even directly from Japan. Irrespective of where they come from, they all go through the same production process and are upgraded with the same improvements for drivability and performance.

Do you sell used or unrestored vehicles?

We don’t sell unrestored Land Cruisers. Occasionally we do have clients who want to resell a vehicle that was previously built by The FJ Company. See what's available now or please contact us for more information.
